Applications

Trapezoidal Aluminum Conductors, Steel- Reinforced (ACSR/TW) is designed for use as a bare overhead distribution and transmission lines. There are two designs of ACSR/TW. One design gives an equal area of aluminum when compared to the standard ACSR conductor sizes. The other design gives an overall outside diameter equal to standard ACSR conductor sizes. Use of this conductor in the equal area design allows equal ampacity in a smaller diameter conductor for ice and wind, when compared with standard ACSR conductor. Use of this conductor in the equal diameter design allows more ampacity in an equal diameter conductor when compared with standard ACSR conductor.

Features and advantages

ACSR/TW has a continuous operating temperature rating of 75°C. ACSR/TW conductor has an “industry- accepted” short duration maximum operating temperature rating of 100°C. Operation of the conductor at elevated temperatures may increase the conductor sag properties and lower the rated tensile strength of the conductor. ACSR/TW conductors are recognized for their record of economy, dependability and favorable strength-to-weight ratio.

ACSR/TW conductors constructed of equivalent aluminum circular mil cross-sectional area provide a conductor that is 10-15% smaller in overall diameter than the equivalent conventional round wire ACSR conductor. The reduced conductor diameter is advantageous in reducing the effects of ice and wind loading on the conductor. The second design is an ACSR/TW bare conductor with an overall diameter equal to the standard ACSR conductor. This design provides up to a 20% increase in aluminum area which results in higher current carrying capacity.

Structure

ACSR/TW is a concentric-lay-stranded conductor consisting of a stranded steel central core with one or more layers of trapezoidal shaped 1350 H19 stranded aluminum wires. Steel core wires are protected from corrosion by galvanizing (class A, B or C), aluminum-clad alloy (AW) or zinc – 5% aluminum mischmetal alloy coating. The steel strands form the central core of the conductor, around which is stranded two, three or four layers of aluminum 1350-H19 wires. The steel core may consist of a concentric stranded cable of 7, 19 or more wires.
